BIOGRAPHY

“No doubt, Roberto Badoglio possesses a broad arsenal, and transmits a lyrical musical persona amid the hyper-mode, single note licks and complex, jazz guitar-like chord voicings. Moreover, the bassist’s supersonic bass riffs are a wonder to behold, he’s a formidable player who communicates warmth, sensitivity and an enviable technique.”

Glenn Astarita, ALL ABOUT JAZZ

Recognized as one of the most intriguing and innovative bass players among the new generation, Roberto Badoglio emerged on the Italian music scene, earning acclaim by clinching the “Italian Bass Contest” for two consecutive years in 2002 and 2003. His journey continued with a finalist position in the “European Bass Contest” in 2004, solidifying his reputation as a rising talent.

In pursuit of his musical aspirations, Roberto made the transatlantic move to Boston in 2005, enrolling at the Berklee College of Music. There also collaborated with pianist Joanne Brackeen in her Ensemble and co-founded the Jazz-Fusion band Oddflow alongside Hara Garacci and Louis Cato. The band released the album “Almost Even” in 2006, marking the beginning of their performances across the East Coast.

In 2007, Roberto relocated to the heart of the music world, New York, where he seamlessly integrated into the local Jazz scene, engaging in both live performances and tours. During this period, he joined forces with avant-garde pop singer Adama, a “MySpace” celebrity, and embarked on a longstanding musical journey with Fusion keyboardist and producer Steve Hunt. This collaboration culminated in Roberto’s debut solo album, “Re-Evaluation Time,” released in 2010 under Steve’s record label “Spice Rack.” The album, featuring Marty Richards on drums and Steve Hunt on keys, gained global recognition, topping charts and earning a spot as a top seller on the Jazz-Fusion online shop “Abstract Logix.”

After making his mark in the U.S., Roberto returned to Europe in 2010, settling in Berlin, where he continued to establish himself as a prominent bass player. Over the years, he engaged in diverse musical collaborations, including projects like the “Silent Jazz Ensemble,” “Reiner Hess Raumshiff jazz,” and the “Aly Keyta trio.” Leading his own trio with Bjössi Klütsch and Marko Djordjevic on drums, Roberto continued to evolve as an artist.

In 2015, the vision of a super fusion band materialized as the debut album of “Beyond Turbines,” featuring Steve Hunt and Bjössi Klütsch, hit the airwaves. With additional powerhouse Virgil Donati on drums, the album garnered widespread acclaim as one of the best publications of the last decade. Roberto’s compositions, including tracks like “State of the Heart,” “Tiger”,”Berlin” “What we Used to Be,” and “Cobra Rings Twice,” showcased his prowess as a composer.

The following year witnessed the release of Roberto’s second solo album, “Lapse Of Worry” (2017), featuring Seamus Blake on sax, Marko Djordjevic on drums, and Bjössi Klütsch on guitar. The album, born from sessions in both Berlin and New York, further solidified Roberto’s standing as a versatile and accomplished musician.

In 2018, Roberto contributed his talents to the album “Nuova Napoli” by Nu Genea, recording bass lines and also co-composing the hit song “Disco Sole.” The success of the album led to extensive touring across Europe and Brazil throughout 2019.

Navigating the challenges of the pandemic, Roberto stayed creatively active, recording his experimental solo album “Onirism (not yet released). The album pushes the boundaries, featuring the bass guitar as the sole instrument played in unconventional ways with various tools and effects, exploring the instrument’s limitless possibilities.

His musical journey also led to collaborations on albums such as “Bar Mediterraneo” by Nu Genea, a new improvisational project by Raumschiff Jazz, and a fresh release from The Silent Jazz Ensemble. In 2022 and 2023 he toured again all over Europe and even Australia laying down funk bass lines with Nu Genea and with the dynamic Aly Keita Trio in Niger and Ivory Coast.
